What this chapter is about
Throughout history, humans have sought ways to alleviate psychological suffering. Before modern psychology, people turned to religious leaders, healers, and wise elders. Today, psychotherapy and other professional therapeutic approaches offer evidence-based methods for addressing psychological difficulties, mental health disorders, and life challenges.
Psychotherapy (also called psychological therapy or talk therapy) is a collaborative process between a trained mental health professional and a person seeking help, aimed at understanding psychological difficulties, reducing symptoms, and promoting well-being and personal growth. It's distinct from medical treatment (medication), though the two often work together.
